We didn't just revive a car last season, we embarked on an incredible ride. If 2014 gets to be half as amazing as2013 was, it will become magical.Making all of 2013 happen would not have been possible without Bryan Min and the gang around BerkTechnology. Therefore thank you so incredibly much!!! Not many can understand the amount of effort that hasgone into this from Berk Technology's side, how much inspiration, knowledge and effort they have poured intothis. If it seems like we have had a prett...
- My crew said "It should feel like you're going to hit the wall, and don't worry if you hit it, we will fix the car", Carl says. Carl's first qualifying received a 76.5 score and it placed him in a preliminary 25thspot. The added power from nitrous that is fully controlled by the AEM Series 2 engine management system was a significant factor to be able to make big runs at the Toyota Irwindale Speedway. The nitrous system was tuned at Road Race Engineering and Carl uses Champion Iridium spa...
In Texas, the Berk Technology team with the additional force from Road Race Engineering provided me with a car that handled the super high temperatures during the four hour long Thursday practice like it was nothing. It's what I call "The Berk Factor", proper prepared and tested. I was able to get a lot of seat time and I tried a few new things/variations as a driver and we always learn something new about what we can and cannot do with our setup. The Formula Drift course layout in Texa...
Instead of building the Nissan V6 motor with all forged internals and turn up the Garrett turbo boost, that original plan changed radically and instead we dropped an earth-shattering 6-litre aluminum GM V8 into the Z, allowing us a much higher power limit for future development. This raw piece of American muscle car heritage is really loud and powerful already but we plan to turbo charge it to really create a beast!   Garrett has run the simulations needed to pick the ideal turbo...
In Florida, however, as fate would have it, what looked to be another Top 32 by the end of the qualifying session turned into a 33rd spot after a few teams protested the speed gun readings and the Berk team got bumped down a couple of spots - a mere 0.2 points out of the Top 32! "It almost feels like we got robbed". Carl explains. "We had the scores from all drivers during the qualifying and we were in 31st spot. Not great, but we were in and that means more practice time and opportunit...
"It's a shame.  I just recently said in an interview that a dogbox is at the top of my upgrade list but we haven't had a chance to get that done." Carl says and continues, "The 2nd-3rd quick upshift is done in the easiest part of the entire Road Atlanta course, but it has to go quick. When the 3rd gear synchro wears out, the gearbox needs almost a second to allow the rpms to drop for the gear to go in. That is enough of a pause that the car straightens out with the fast chassis setup...
The team implemented a first few of many planned changes to the car, one being a very basic fix;  at Long Beach, Carl Rydquist had to drift with a too short final gear ratio with almost 20mph less wheel speed than desired in 3rd gear. "This is really the basics, and I had planned a much longer gear ratio but we ran into a last minute unexpected problem that created a domino effect of adjustments we had to do", Carl says. "In the end the shorter ratio I ended up using caused some ...
